In 1945 George was called to serve his country and was sent to Japan where he served two years. After discharge he met Leona Dykstra and they were married on Sept. 2, 1947. They moved to a farm east of Sumas where their six children were born and raised. In 1965 they formed Valley Plumbing and Electric and built a house and shop on Mitchell Street in Sumas. Valley Electric grew to a large company located on Halverstick Road.
After 20 years George retired and worked with his brother John in the grave digging business. George was a member of Sumas Christian Reformed Church where he served on the council. He served on the Sumas Christian School Board. He also served for 20 years on the Sumas City Council. He was a member of the Sumas Senior Center. George enjoyed the simple things in life, spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed many years bowling and playing pool.
His joy of living with Mom on Mitchell Street was watching the mountains and seeing God’s promise that the seasons will always exist. Winter coming with snow on the Moosehead and in the spring the mountains turned green. In summer the blazing sun came over the mountain and in the fall everything turned beautiful colors and another year was over only to start again. God was faithful and George was thankful to be able to witness that every year.
George and Leona spent many hours sitting outside in the nice weather greeting and visiting with those who passed by.
