Gilbert McCollum Jr.

  Gilbert D. McCollum Jr. was born on Aug. 25, 1929, to Jennie M. (Johnson) and Gilbert D. McCollum Sr. of Everson. Gilbert passed away on Aug. 19, 2015, at his family farm.
  Gilbert is survived by his sisters, Joy Byrum of Seattle and Gloria Elliott of Bend, Oregon; four nieces and one nephew.
  Gilbert retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland, as a geneticist. He developed disease-resistant onions, carrots, potatoes and asparagus. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Washington State University and both a master’s degree and doctorate degree from U.C.-Davis/Berkeley.
  Gilbert was an avid supporter of political, humanitarian, environmental and religious causes. He was an avid reader of books and magazines and collector of many publications.
  Gilbert had a unique sense of humor and valued and appreciated many viewpoints.
  At Gilbert’s request he was cremated. A memorial service will be held in late spring/summer 2016.
