FERNDALE — The Ferndale City Council approved a contract for Susan Duncan, previously the assistant city clerk, to become the new city clerk. The role, paying $50,000 per year not counting next year’s COLA increase, accounts for a portion of the job description handled by departing Assistant City Administrator Sam Taylor.
Duncan will handle human resources, legislative services, records management/public records and facility rentals and will be the liaison to the Ferndale Arts Commission.
The rest of Taylor’s tasks have been assigned to new hire Riley Sweeney, known in Whatcom County for his Political Junkie blog, covering local politics.
Sweeney’s contract, although not yet approved by the council, also calls for $50,000 per year in salary with a year’s probationary period, according to City Administrator Greg Young.
Sweeney’s duties will include communications, special projects, website management, risk management, liaison to the Parks, Recreation & Trails Advisory Board and evening council meetings.
