Betty Weg

Betty Weg, age 91, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2018. She was known for her faithfulness to God, loving spirit, and being a strong and amazing example to all.

Betty was born in a little house on Depot Road outside of Lynden on Nov. 19, 1926 to parents William and Winifred (Gunst) deKubber. She grew up in the Lynden area and graduated from Lynden High School.

Betty and Peter Weg Jr. met and were married on Nov. 5, 1947 in a double wedding with Jim and Babe Bosman, a special time for both couples. Betty became a member of First Christian Reformed Church and attended Ladies Aid for many years.

Betty was a bookkeeper for the Lynden Department Store until 1950 when their first daughter arrived. About this same time Pete and Betty moved onto their own dairy farm working side by side milking and doing chores. She raised 300 chickens and sold eggs commercially. Together they raised their six children on the farm before moving into town in 1988.

Betty and Pete volunteered at the Lynden Christian paper baler, even using their own truck for a time. She loved adult coloring, crossword puzzles and playing Hay Day. Betty attended Whatcom County Dairy Wives and TOPS for many years and still enjoyed getting together for coffee with these ladies. She always knew when the Mariners were playing.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joan DeBoer and son-in-law Glenn Bos.

She is survived by husband of 70 years, Peter Weg Jr.; children Sharon Oppewall, Marsha Miller, Rick Weg (Carol), Jan Bos, Lonnie Postma (Brian) and Debra Luna (Dan); 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She will be greatly missed by her brothers Jack (Peggy) deKubber of Snohomish and Denny deKubber of Lynden; sister-in-law and friend Rena Steensma; brothers-in-law Wes (Carolyn) Weg and Henry Weg; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A private family graveside service was held on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Monumenta Cemetery, followed by a memorial service in First Christian Reformed Church of Lynden. Memorials are suggested to Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Drive, Lynden, WA 98264.
