Gertrude Korver

Lynden resident Gertrude (Gert) Korver went home to her Lord on March 5, 2018 at the age of 101.

She was born to Neal and Emma (Bleeker) Grifhorst on Feb. 2, 1917 in Castlewood, South Dakota. In her early years she lived in South Dakota and then her family moved to Orange City, Iowa, when Gert was in her early teens. On March 8, 1940 she was married to Simon Korver and in December 1946 they moved to Whatcom County, settling in the Everson/Nooksack area prior to moving to Lynden in 1975. Gert was a faithful and active member of the Nooksack Valley Reformed Church and after their move to Lynden she was a faithful member of First Reformed Church in Lynden.

Gert was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Simon; and four sisters. Si and Gert enjoyed many winters in Hemet, California, as well as traveling with the Good Sam Club.

Gert is survived by: son Gig (Marilyn) of Ferndale; daughter Jan (Doug) Scholten of Bellingham; grandchildren: Mark and Michael Scholten, both of Bellingham; Paul Korver of Los Angeles; Matthew Korver of Phoenix; Meleah Korver of Bellingham; Kevin (Ember) Korver of Seattle; great-grandchildren Christian, Kaden, Misha, Lincoln and Elijah; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Gert was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress and provided her services to many regular appreciative customers for more than 60 years. Her hobbies included writing poetry, working crossword puzzles, playing cards, working on craft projects and crocheting. Her home was filled with numerous craft projects that she had created. Of all her creations, Mom was most pleased with the crocheted wall hanging of the Lord’s Prayer which took more than 300 hours to complete. When Gert took her last breath, this item was hanging in her room at the Christian Health Care Center.
