Orma Slater

Screen Shot 2015-09-23 at 10.38.51 AM  Orma Mae (Lucas) Slater passed peacefully into her Lord’s arms on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015. She was preceded on this journey in 1999 by her husband, Rev. Ronald Slater.
Orma is lovingly remembered by her children: Donna, Doug and his wife Tami, Dawn, and Deb and her husband Robert; her grandchildren: Ross (and Char) Dickinson, Clay (and Melanie) Dickinson, Danielle Slater, Darci, Dusty, Daley and Danner Duncan; her great-grandchildren: Madison, Colt, Lily and Diem; and numerous extended family.
She is also remembered by her friends beyond counting as it became very clear early on that Ron and Orma’s family would be sharing them both with a much wider community. Together they helped establish, build and nourish New Life Fellowship in Lynden, a ministry that put them at the very heart of the community they both loved and served. Although Ron was the face of the ministry, theirs was always a joint calling.
In the spare few moments she found between raising children and touching lives, Orma enjoyed leading and playing the piano for “Tuesday Morning Hymn Sing with Orma” at Lynden Manor for over 15 years and, when health allowed, bowling. Orma once bowled a perfect score, a feat she recounted with modest enthusiasm. There was also Orma’s lifelong interest in Scrabble. A casual glance at her iPad would often reveal up to a dozen games being played at once.
Orma brought love and light into every room she entered and we are all better people for being a part of her beautiful life. We will miss her and her hats terribly, but now she is off on her next big adventure, arm and arm with her husband Ron who has been missing her for quite some time.
A public viewing will be held in Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held in New Life Fellowship, 810 E. Pole Rd., Lynden, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be considered to the Lynden Community Center, 401 Grover St., Lynden, WA 98264; or Whatcom Hospice House, 2800 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225.
